Speaking this week Cllr. Frankie Keena stated that he has called a public meeting to discuss the proposed downgrading of Custume Barracks, Athlone for Monday 11th June 2012 at 8.30pm in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel.

I have received a lot of phone calls from personnel within the Barracks and also the wider community outlining their concern and annoyance about this proposal. They want urgent clarification on this matter covering such issues as the consequences of the downgrading of Custume Barracks to their work in both the short and long term, he said.

Obviously if this proposal goes ahead and the status of the Barracks changes we will be faced with an uncertain future for Custume Barracks and those people working there. Also it will have a massive detrimental effect on the economic activity of Athlone, he added.

Therefore following numerous queries I have called this public meeting for Monday 11th of June to seek answers and more importantly to try and put a stop to this ludicrous proposal, said Cllr. Keena.

All Oireachtas members in the Constituency plus local public representatives have been invited to attend.
