Fresh back from spending a day outside Dail Eireann protesting to close headshops Cllr. Frankie Keena, Chairman of the Athlone Drug Awareness Group said that the trip was a very fruitful and beneficial exercise. There were people present from Athlone, Roscommon, Drogheda, Dun Laoghaire and other parts of Dublin present on the day. It was a very colourful event with signs and banners highlighting the message to close headshops, he added.
Throughout the day various Senators and TDs came out to speak to us and to lend their support to our cause. Our local Deputy Mary O’Rourke and Senator Nicky McFadden were amongst those who came out to us. The main purpose of the protest was to keep the headshop issue high on the agenda of the Oireachtas members and in particular the Government. We achieved this and it will not stop there until we are rid of these headshops and their various substances for good, concluded Cllr. Keena.
