The Blyry/Moydrum Neighbourhood watch recently organized a crime prevention presentation evening on securing your home in the Garrycastle GAA Clubhouse. Speaking at the event the Chairman, Cllr. Frankie Keena said that now more than ever people need to be vigilant with regard to their property. Unfortunately over the last number of weeks there have been a number of house burglaries in the surrounding areas and as we are in the middle of winter and the dark evenings are upon us some people’s homes may be vulnerable. Also another downside to the recession that we are in is that a certain element in our society may turn to crime and burglary to try and make money, he added.
Guest speaker on the night was Sgt. John Connolly, who is the Crime Prevention Officer for the Westmeath Garda Division. Sgt. Connolly is one of only approx.30 crime prevention specialists officers in the Country.The committee was absolutely delighted to have Sgt. Connolly as their guest speaker as his knowledge and expertise in advising the public on how to secure their home is excellent.
This event was not just open to people from Blyry/Moydrum/Baylin & Annagh areas, but to anybody who could spare an hour of their time. It was a very worthwhile information night and following on from it, it is planned that Communities would form Community Watch schemes to look out for one another, said Cllr. Keena.
