Westmeath County Councillor, Cllr. Frankie Keena has raised an urgent matter with the Council regarding the safety of the public along Athlone Relief Road. There is an urgent need to provide adequate perimeter fencing along the relief road to prevent children wandering onto it, he said. This matter has being brought to my attention by a large number of people who reside nearby, he added. There are a number of obvious suspect access points alongside some housing estates where unfortunately children are gaining access to the relief road. This is a very dangerous practice and now that the NRA have applied to change the status of this road to a motorway it is going to increase the dangers, even though the speed limit will stay the same, he said.Following Cllr. Keena’s representation the Council contacted the National Roads Authority and they have reported back by saying that they will work with the council on this matter as well as other safety issues. While this was a welcome response it is important that words are put into action and I will be continuing to pursue this matter as a matter of urgency, he concluded.
